About Peter

Dr Peter Freeman is an Honorary Associate Lecturer in the School of Music at the University of Queensland, part of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. He completed his PhD in 2006 from the School of Music, University of Queensland, with the thesis titled Eclecticism in the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim: a consideration of stylistic diversity. This doctoral research established his expertise in analyzing the stylistic breadth of the Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, a central figure in bossa nova whose works blend popular and serious music traditions. Freeman's scholarly output includes the 2019 book The Music of Antônio Carlos Jobim, published by Intellect Books, which provides one of the first extensive musicological examinations of Jobim's compositions. The monograph details musical influences such as samba, choro, modinha, and Western art music from composers like Villa-Lobos, Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Gershwin; it dissects harmonic languages through examples like 'Chega de saudade,' rhythmic techniques including clave patterns and polyrhythms, and structural designs in pieces such as 'Insensatez,' 'Dindi,' and 'Saudade do Brasil.' Earlier publications encompass a 2004 book chapter, Antonio Carlos Jobim: Eclecticism in popular music, in Music Research: New Directions for a New Century, and a conference paper presented at the 2004 IASPM Australia New Zealand Conference on 'Complexity, simplicity and poetic invention in Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Aguas de Marco" (Waters of March).'

Freeman's career spans academia, performance, and preservation. From 2009 to 2012, he coordinated the University of Queensland Bachelor of Arts Major in Popular Music. He has supervised postgraduate research, including PhD theses on practising composition through performance and folios of compositions with critical commentary, as well as an MPhil on Piazzolla's Tango Etude no. 3. Actively engaged in music-making, Freeman coordinates the Tropical Dance Orchestra, manages the UQ Big Band, and performs as a double bass player with local jazz ensembles. He has produced CD albums for various artists and contributed to creative works, such as the 2009 'Swinging samba: Jazz party concert' at Brisbane City Hall and 2008 radio interviews on 4MBS Classic FM. As Secretary of the Queensland Jazz Archive Inc., Freeman preserves Queensland's jazz heritage in partnership with the Queensland State Library. His interests include the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim, jazz, music technology, and popular music, influencing both academic discourse and practical music communities.
