About Peter

Peter Henry is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology and Toxicology, within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Western Australia. He earned his BSc and PhD from the University of Western Australia. Following a postdoctoral period at the University of Melbourne, he returned to UWA as an NHMRC Research Fellow, progressing through positions as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology to Associate Professor. He served as Head of the Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Anaesthesiology Unit from 2008-2009 and 2014-2016, and as Chair of the Pharmacology Teaching and Learning Committee from 2006-2007. Henry's research investigates the role of key receptor-effector systems in the lungs of healthy and diseased individuals, with a focus on receptor function and distribution in allergic and viral airway diseases. His team has advanced understanding in respiratory pharmacology, publishing nearly 100 papers, including in Nature, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Biochemical Pharmacology, and British Journal of Pharmacology. Approximately 75% of his original papers appear in journals with an impact factor of 3 or higher, and he is first or senior author on 65% of them. He has secured $4.8 million in NHMRC funding, including $2.3 million as Chief Investigator A, with ongoing support until 2020. Key publications include 'Azithromycin inhibits mucin secretion, mucous metaplasia, airway inflammation and airways hyperresponsiveness in mice exposed to house dust mite extract' (2022, American Journal of Physiology - Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology), 'Does "Skippy" wheeze? Evidence of airway remodeling in the Australian kangaroo' (2022, American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology), and 'Pharmacological ablation of the airway smooth muscle layer-Mathematical predictions of functional improvement in asthma' (2020, Physiological Reports).

Henry has made significant contributions to teaching, coordinating units such as PHAR3320, PHAR3321, and IMED2002, which received Vice-Chancellor recognition as 'Consistently Excellent' in 2017. He has earned UWA Student Guild Student Choice Awards for excellence in learning and student engagement, along with nominations for Faculty Excellence in Teaching and Supervision awards. His service includes membership on NHMRC Grant Review Panels for Pharmacology, Respiratory Medicine and Sleep (2006, 2011, 2013) and Career Development Awards (2010), over 10 years on the Asthma Foundation of Western Australia Medical Research Advisory Committee, previous roles on the Council and Scientific Advisory Committee of the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists, and editorships for Pulmonary Pharmacology & Therapeutics and Frontiers in Pharmacology. He has chaired faculty web review groups, served on safety and course committees, and contributed to staff selection panels and teaching committees.
