About Peter

Peter Moore is a distinguished conductor, bassoonist, and music educator who served for 20 years as Associate Professor and Head of Wind Studies and Conducting at the University of Western Australia's School of Music. Born in the United Kingdom, he completed his formal musical education at Trinity College of Music, London, graduating with teaching and performing diplomas in both bassoon and piano. He also holds a BA from the Open University, along with FTCL and LRAM qualifications. Emigrating to Western Australia in 1984, Moore began his Australian career as a lecturer in music via an outreach program in Kalgoorlie offered by the Western Australian College of Advanced Education. In 1986, he joined the West Australian Symphony Orchestra as second bassoon and contrabassoon player. The next year, he took up a lecturing position in bassoon at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he was also a member of the wind quintet Ensemble Vasse.

In 1988, Moore was appointed Musical Director and Conductor of the Western Australian Youth Orchestras Association, a position he has held continuously. At UWA, he started in 1991 as a lecturer and conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra, progressing to senior lecturer and Associate Professor while heading the wind studies and conducting programs. His extensive performance career encompasses membership in the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, principal bassoon with the Australian Chamber Orchestra for 13 years, guest principal bassoon with the Sydney and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, and principal baroque and classical bassoon with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra from 2004 to 2016. He has participated in commercial recording projects for ABC, UWA, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Moore is celebrated for his Babies Proms concerts introducing classical music to young audiences, including 30 years with WAYO, 14 years with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as of 2019, and series with the Penang Philharmonic. A frequent guest conductor with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and WAAPA Symphony Orchestra, and an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board, his contributions earned him the Order of Australia Medal for music education, the Australian Centenary Medal, and a 1980 Scottish Arts Council award.
