Professor Peter Andrew White is a Professor in the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of New South Wales. He holds a B.Sc. Hons from King’s College London (1992) and a PhD from University College London (1996) in molecular microbiology and protein biochemistry. Following postdoctoral research at Macquarie University as a Royal Society Fellow, he served as Hepatitis Group Leader at the Virology Division of Prince of Wales Hospital from 1998 to 2002 before joining UNSW in 2003 as Senior Lecturer. He progressed to Associate Professor in 2008 and Professor in 2013. He also holds an honorary appointment as Consultant Virologist at Prince of Wales Hospital.
Professor White leads a research team focused on molecular virology, viral discovery, norovirus epidemiology and evolution, antiviral development, and viral recombination. His group has identified and characterised pandemic norovirus strains including Hunter 2004 and Sydney 2012, and has discovered numerous novel viruses through metagenomic approaches in animals such as cane toads and marsupials. He has authored or co-authored key publications including the book Foodborne Viral Pathogens (2017) and serves on committees including the Executive Committee of the Australian Centre for HIV and Hepatitis Virology. Professor White coordinates courses such as Viruses and Disease (MICR3061) and teaches microbiology and virology at undergraduate and medical levels. He is a Fellow of the Australian Society for Microbiology (FASM, since 2011) and recipient of the 2015 Titan of Teaching Award from the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences.
