Dr Phil Anthony serves as Head of the E-Learning Team at the University of Kent, a role in which he leads efforts to support and develop the use of technology in learning and teaching across the institution. He joined the University of Kent in 2018. Prior to this appointment, he worked for four years at Canterbury Christ Church University as a university instructor in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science, where he taught a number of different modules and conducted PhD research investigating training methods that improve running performance. Dr Anthony holds a PGCAP and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). He draws on his teaching experience and technical expertise to advise on enhancing student learning through learning technologies. He founded the Digitally Enhanced Education webinar series, which has grown to attract a global audience exceeding 3,400 participants and has addressed topics including online pedagogy, digital accessibility, electronic assessment and post-pandemic teaching. In 2021, Dr Anthony was awarded the title of Learning Technologist of the Year by the Association for Learning Technology in recognition of his outstanding achievement and excellent practice in the field of technology enhanced learning. He has also been recognised in his capacity as Head of AI at the University of Kent for contributions to institutional approaches to generative AI in higher education, including the development of guidance on ethical and responsible use.
His professional activities centre on digitally enhanced education, AI literacy, and the integration of learning technologies to create dynamic and engaging student experiences. Dr Anthony has organised and hosted webinars featuring international experts and has contributed to university initiatives promoting transparent policies on student AI use. These efforts align with broader institutional commitments to academic rigour while supporting staff and students in adapting to technological advancements in education.
