Rate My Professor Phil Gressman

Philip T. Gressman is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has been a member of the faculty since 2008. He is also affiliated with the Applied Mathematics and Computational Science program. Gressman earned an AB from Washington University in St. Louis in 2001 and a PhD from Princeton University in 2005. Prior to joining Penn, he served as a Gibbs Assistant Professor at Yale University from 2005 to 2008. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2011 and to full Professor in 2014. His research focuses on harmonic analysis and partial differential equations, with particular interests in geometric averaging operators, oscillatory integral operators, sublevel set estimates, Fourier restriction, geometric combinatorics, and geometric analysis, as well as applications to equations such as the Boltzmann equation and the Gross-Pitaevskii Hierarchy.

Gressman was named a 2025 Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in recognition of his contributions to the field. He has received Math Department Good Teaching Awards at Penn. In addition to his research and teaching, Gressman has contributed to departmental initiatives including co-advising the Bridge Fellowship program and developing active learning materials and lecture notes for analysis courses.
