Professor Pon Selvan Muthu Perumal, holding the title of John Curtin Distinguished Professor, serves as Director of Research, Head of Faculty, and Head of School of Science and Engineering at Curtin University Dubai. With over 27 years of experience in engineering education, research, and institutional development, including more than 17 years in the UAE higher education sector, he is recognized as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), UK, and a Fellow of the Curtin Academy, Australia. He played a pivotal role as founding academic for Mechanical Engineering programs at Manipal University Dubai, Amity University Dubai, and Curtin University Dubai, overseeing curriculum design, laboratory development, accreditation, industry collaborations, and student success programs. An approved PhD supervisor at Curtin University and other institutions, he holds memberships in professional bodies including SAE, ASHRAE, IMechE, ASME, IEEE, EI, ASQ, FEDA, and ISTE.
His research focuses on machine design, optimisation techniques, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, and engineering for sustainable development. Professor Muthu Perumal has authored over 175 research articles and multiple books. Key publications include 'Effects of process parameters on surface roughness in abrasive waterjet cutting of aluminium' (2012), 'Estimation of power in low velocity vertical axis wind turbine' (2015), and 'Computation Models for Tsunami Wave Propagation using Extended Cellular Automata' (2024). His contributions have earned numerous accolades, such as the Teaching Excellence Award (2014, Manipal University Dubai), Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport (2017, RTA Dubai), Dr APJ Abdul Kalam International Excellence Award for Education (2017), Distinguished Conservation Project Award (2018, DEWA Dubai), Alleem Sustainability Researcher Award (2018), Sustainability Ambassador Award (2019, RTA Dubai), Research Excellence Award (2020, Curtin University Dubai), TAG Founders Award for Academic of the Year (2021), Curtin Global Awards (2022, 2023, 2025), Ezhumin Award for Education (2023), and Outstanding Contribution to Learning and Teaching in the Global Category (2025, Curtin University).
