Challenges students to grow and excel.
Prashant Shenoy is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science in the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he has served on the faculty since 1998. He earned a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 1993, an M.S. in Computer Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin in 1994, and a Ph.D. in Computer Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin in 1998, receiving the Best Dissertation Award from the UT Austin Department of Computer Sciences. His career at UMass Amherst progressed from Assistant Professor (1998-2004) and Associate Professor (2004-2009) to Professor (2009-2020) and Distinguished Professor since 2020. Shenoy served as Associate Dean of the College of Information and Computer Sciences from 2016 to 2025 and is currently on sabbatical leave through Spring 2027. He heads the Laboratory for Advanced Systems Software and directs the Center for Smart and Connected Society at UMass Amherst. He is also PI and director of the NSF CoDec Expedition in Computational Decarbonization.
Shenoy's research interests encompass distributed systems and networking, with an emphasis on cloud and green computing. His work addresses systems issues for distributed environments ranging from large server clusters to networks of small sensors, including cloud and edge computing, mobile computing, Internet of Things, and energy and sustainability. Key publications include "CarbonScaler: Leveraging Cloud Workload Elasticity for Optimizing Carbon-Efficiency" (Proc. ACM SIGMETRICS 2024, Best Student Paper Award), "SmartCharge" (Proc. ACM e-Energy 2012, ACM SIGEnergy Test of Time Award 2024), "The Green Mirage: Impact of Location and Market-based Carbon Intensity Estimation on Carbon Optimization Efficacy" (Proc. ACM e-Energy 2024, Best Paper Runner-up), and "Combining Renewable Solar and Open Air Cooling for Internet-scale Distributed Networks" (Proc. ACM e-Energy 2019, Best Paper Award). Shenoy has garnered 17 best paper or runner-up awards, two ACM Test of Time Awards (SIGEnergy 2024; Sigmetrics 2016), fellowships from ACM (2019, for contributions to modeling and design of distributed systems), IEEE (2013), AAAS (2018), and AAIA (2022), the UMass President's Science and Technology Award (2017, 2012, 2007), NSF CAREER Award (1999), and the 2026 IIT Bombay Distinguished Alumnus Award. He has served as program chair for over a dozen ACM and IEEE conferences, on editorial boards of journals including ACM Transactions on IoT and ACM TOMPECS, and as founding chair of ACM SIGEnergy. Shenoy has delivered keynote talks at events such as the ACM India Winter School on Edge AI (2025) and NSF CSR PI Meeting (2025), contributing significantly to energy informatics and sustainable computing.
