About Prathap

Prathap Haridoss is a Professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He earned a B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Madras and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. Prior to joining the faculty at IIT Madras, he worked as a Senior Scientist at Plug Power, a fuel cell company in New York. His research focuses on fuel cells and carbon nanomaterials, with additional interests in carbon nanotubes and assistive devices. He has three US patents and numerous international journal publications. Haridoss authored the book Physics of Materials: Essential Concepts of Solid State Physics and developed an online course on the subject that has garnered over one million views. He has coordinated the NPTEL online course Introduction to Research and served as a coordinator for the NPTEL program at IIT Madras. He was also a founding coordinator of the BSc in Programming and Data Science program at IIT Madras, which later expanded to include a four-year BS option. Haridoss has guided multiple doctoral theses in areas such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells and carbon nanostructures.

Since 2013, he has held the position of Professor at IIT Madras, following earlier appointments as faculty member starting in 2003. His contributions extend to online education through NPTEL, where he has played a key role in one of the world's largest open online education initiatives. Haridoss maintains an active research profile with publications on topics including nickel oxynitride catalysts and functionalized carbon materials for energy applications.
