About Priyan

Professor Priyan Mendis is a Professor of Civil Engineering in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. He earned his PhD and Bachelor's degree from Monash University. Priyan Mendis has been at the University of Melbourne since 1992, progressing to his current role as Professor. Prior to academia, he worked as a structural engineer. He leads the Advanced Protective Technologies for Engineering Structures Group (APTES) and serves as Director of the ARC Centre for Advanced Manufacturing of Prefabricated Modular Housing (CAMPH), also known as the Centre for Prefabricated Construction. His expertise encompasses structural engineering, protective technologies for engineering structures, prefabricated modular construction, high-strength concrete, wind loading on tall buildings, blast and impact resistance, fire engineering, and sustainable construction practices.

Mendis has made significant contributions through research and leadership. He received the Honorary Life Time Membership from the Concrete Institute of Australia in 2017 and, jointly with Tuan Ngo, the inaugural University of Melbourne Award for Excellence in Industry-Engaged Research in 2017. His work has garnered over 17,900 citations. Key publications include 'Wind Loading on Tall Buildings' (2007, co-authored with T. Ngo, N. Haritos, A. Hira, B. Samali, and J. Cheung), 'Prefabricated Building Systems—Design and Construction' (2022, co-authored with Tharaka Gunawardena), and serving as co-editor for 'ICSECM 2019: Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Structural Engineering and Construction Management' (2020). Other notable works feature contributions to multiscale modeling of concrete and high-strength concrete design guides. As a recognized leader, he directs major research initiatives advancing innovative, resilient, and sustainable building technologies, influencing prefabricated housing and protective structural design globally.
