About Priyanka

Priyanka Agarwal is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the School of Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she has served since 2020. Previously, she was a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles from 2019 to 2020, Mathematics Instructor at Tarrant County College District in Fort Worth, Texas from 2010 to 2011, and held graduate teaching assistant positions at the University of California, Irvine and Purdue University. Earlier in her career, she worked as a Business Analyst at GENPACT Analytics/General Electric from 2003 to 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia, and Bangalore, India. Agarwal holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of California, Irvine (2019), with a dissertation entitled "Student Participation and Agency in Mathematical Problem Posing"; an M.S. in Mathematics from Purdue University (2010); a Master of Computer Applications from Army Institute of Management Kolkata, India (2003); and a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Delhi, India (2000).

Her research focuses on student participation and agency in mathematical problem posing, productive disciplinary engagement in mathematics and science, equity in mathematics education, collective agency in collaborative learning, and gendered epistemic injustice in K-12 mathematics. Agarwal has earned notable awards, including the Inclusive Mathematics Environments Early Career Fellowship (2019), membership in the Mindset Scholars Network funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Michael E. Martinez Award for Outstanding Research and Service from UC Irvine (2018), the University of California President’s Dissertation Year Fellowship (2018), the Dissertation Fellowship Award from College Preparatory Mathematics (2018), and the Research Partnership Grant from the California Education Research Association (2017). Key publications include "Multidimensional noticing for equity: Theorizing mathematics teachers’ systems of noticing to disrupt inequities" (Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2022, with van Es, Hand, and Sandoval); "Integrating power to advance the study of connective and productive disciplinary engagement in mathematics and science" (Cognition and Instruction, 2019, with Sengupta-Irving); "Beyond tracking and detracking: The dimensions of organizational differentiation in schools" (Sociology of Education, 2019, with Domina et al.); "Conceptualizing perseverance in problem solving as collective enterprise" (Mathematical Thinking and Learning, 2017, with Sengupta-Irving); and "Professional sense-makers: Instructional specialists in contemporary schooling" (Educational Researcher, 2015, with Domina, Lewis, and Hanselman). She has presented refereed conference proceedings at the International Conference of the Learning Sciences (2020) and served on the Faculty Hiring and Search Committee (2020-2023) and Racial Equity Fund Committee (2020) at UW-Madison's Department of Curriculum and Instruction, as well as ad hoc reviewer for journals such as Cognition and Instruction and Educational Studies in Mathematics. Invited talks include the Lucas Educational Research Engagement Symposium (2021).
