About Qi

Professor Qi Wang is a Full Professor in Autonomous Systems with the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Leicester. His research specializations include 5G/6G/IoT networking and applications, AI applications, and vertical use cases. He previously worked at the University of the West of Scotland, serving as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on multiple projects. Wang has acted as Director of Studies for 19 PhD students who graduated in the UK, line manager for over 10 postdoctoral research fellows and research assistants, and invited external PhD/research degree examiner for UK and European universities. He has led various roles in international and national research projects, collaborating with academic and industry partners worldwide, with a total project budget nearing 100 million GBP.

Wang has authored over 240 publications, including more than 70 SCI-indexed journal papers, and won six Best Paper Awards. He is Lead Editor of ITU-T standards ITU-T Y.3182 and ITU-T Y.3183, and regular contributor to over 10 high-profile white papers commissioned by the European Commission on 5G, 6G, AI, and related topics. Key projects include EU Horizon 2020 initiatives SELFNET (7.0 million euros), SliceNet (8.0 million euros), 6G BRAINS (5.7 million euros), 5G INDUCE (6.0 million euros), and ARCADIAN-IoT (6.0 million euros); EU Horizon Europe projects INCODE (8.6 million euros), RIGOUROUS (5.3 million euros), and 6G-PATH (16.8 million euros); UK EPSRC projects such as Enabler for Next-Generation Mobile Video Applications and National Edge AI Hub (£12 million); UK CENSIS projects Smart RPAS, Smart Crane, NG-RPAS; and UKRI SIPF Digital Dairy Value-Chain (21 million pounds). His honors include the UK Times Higher Education Awards 2020 Knowledge Exchange/Transfer Initiative of the Year Award and Scotland Centre for Engineering Education & Development Industries Innovation Award 2020. Wang is a Voting Member of Europe’s 6G-IA, former Board Member of the EU 5G-PPP Technology Board, member of Scotland’s AI Strategy Developing AI & AI Enabled Services and Products Working Group, and Academic Member of UN ITU and ETSI.
