Associate Professor Qi Zeng serves in the Department of Finance within the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne, where he also holds the position of Joint PhD Program Director (Finance). He earned his PhD in Finance from the Finance Department at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, in 2003. Zeng's research specializations include asset pricing, household finance, and mutual funds. His scholarly work addresses key issues in financial markets, such as ownership structures, incentives, investor information processing, and regulatory impacts on emerging markets.
Zeng has published in leading finance journals. Key publications include 'Ownership Structure, Incentives, and Asset Returns' (Management Science, 2024, with Hae Won Jung and Ajay Subramanian), which examines how ownership influences asset returns; 'Stock returns and the Miller Modigliani valuation formula' (Journal of Financial Economics, 2013, with Gil Aharoni and Bruce Grundy), exploring profitability, investment, and book-to-market predictors; 'Under Weighting of Private Information by Top Analysts' (with Gil Aharoni and Eti Einhorn); 'Downside Risk Aversion and the Downside Risk Premium' (2018); 'Retail investor expectations and trading preferences' (2021, with Sarantis Tsiaplias and Guay Lim); 'Testing the growth option theory: the profitability of momentum strategies' (2012, with Gil Aharoni); 'Asset Pricing Theory'; 'Financial Intermediaries'; 'Two Paths to Financial Distress'; and 'The Unintended Consequences of Regulations in Emerging Financial Markets: Evidence from the Chinese IPO Market,' supported by a grant from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Zeng has received funding as Chief Investigator for Australian Research Council project DP0774407 and an internal grant of AUD 15,000 from the Faculty of Business and Economics in 2015. He contributes to the field through conference organization, including Finance Down Under.
