Qiang Zhu, PhD, is the William E. Stirton Professor and Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science within the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. He previously served as Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Science. His academic background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, an M.S. from McMaster University, an M.Eng. from Southeast University, and a B.S. from Southeast University. Zhu's research specializations encompass data management, data mining, data science, machine learning, optimization, and intelligent systems. These include query optimization for emerging databases, multidimensional indexing, big data analytics and processing, k-nearest neighbor search, spatio-temporal data processing, streaming data processing, self-managing databases, distributed databases, data security and privacy, data mining, bioinformatics, and vehicular data management and applications such as telematics and infotainment. His teaching areas cover Computer and Information Science, Data Science, and Economics and Computation. He is affiliated with the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research group.
Zhu has published over 130 research papers in prestigious journals and conference proceedings, such as ACM Transactions on Database Systems, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, The VLDB Journal, ACM Transactions on Information Systems, IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, and Proceedings of the VLDB Endowment. Key publications include "VA-Store: A Virtual Approximate Store Approach to Supporting Repetitive Big Data in Genome Sequence Analyses" (IEEE TKDE, 2020), "Hamming Metric Multi-Granularity Locality-Sensitive Bloom Filter" (IEEE/ACM TON, 2018), "Multi-granularity Locality-sensitive Bloom Filter" (IEEE TC, 2015), "The BoND-tree: An Efficient Indexing Method for Box Queries in Non-ordered Discrete Data Spaces" (IEEE TKDE, 2013), and "The ND-Tree: A Dynamic Indexing Technique for Multidimensional Non-ordered Discrete Data Spaces" (VLDB, 2003). His research has been funded by NSF, IBM, Ford, and internal university sources. He has received major awards including the 2025 Springer Nature Editor of Distinction Award, 2013 ACM Distinguished Scientist Award, 2004 IBM Faculty Award, 2003 IBM Faculty Award, 2001 UMD Distinguished Faculty Research Award, 1999 IBM University Partnership Research Award, 1988 Scientific Progress Award of PRC Education Commission, and the 2008 Wilkes Award from The British Computer Society, along with other best paper awards. Zhu has served as Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor, and Editorial Board member for Information Sciences, Journal of Big Data, and IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems. He has been a program and organizing committee member for over 250 international conferences and has given invited talks at universities and industrial research labs.
