Dr. Qiaoyun Xie is a geospatial scientist and Senior Lecturer at the School of Engineering, The University of Western Australia. She earned her PhD in Remote Sensing and GIS from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (2014–2017) and the University of Southampton (2016–2017). She also served as a Visiting Scholar in Environmental Science at the University of California, Berkeley (2022) and held an Honorary Fellowship at the University of Technology Sydney (May–July 2023). Her research employs remote sensing, geographical information systems, and field measurements to monitor vegetation dynamics, phenology patterns, carbon dynamics, and ecosystem resilience to droughts and climate variability across Australian landscapes. Her work examines vegetation parameter retrieval, land surface responses to climate, land use activities, and major disturbances, providing critical data for ecosystem management, agriculture, bushfire fuel accumulation, crop yields, airborne allergens, and native vegetation conditions.
Dr. Xie has produced 78 research outputs, including articles in prestigious journals such as Remote Sensing of Environment, Nature Communications, Global Change Biology, and Ecological Indicators. Key publications include "Satellite observations reveal ecosystem resistance and resilience to short-term water stress driven by dominant vegetation along a rainfall gradient in Australia" (Remote Sensing of Environment, 2026), "Land surface phenology indicators retrieved across diverse ecosystems using a modified threshold algorithm" (Ecological Indicators, 2023), "Satellite-observed shifts in C3/C4 abundance in Australian grasslands are associated with rainfall patterns" (Remote Sensing of Environment, 2022), and "An Enhanced Phenology Dataset for Global Drylands from 2001 to 2019" (Scientific Data, 2025). She has developed Australia’s nationwide vegetation phenology products at 500m resolution and contributed to a textbook on Earth Observation applications for terrestrial vegetation. Dr. Xie has secured over $2 million in merit-based research funding, holds one patent, and received awards such as the University of Western Australia School of Engineering Early-Career Research Award (2024), iLEAPS-OzFlux Best Oral Presentation Award for Early Career Scientists (2023), Cross-faculty Collaboration Award (2022), and International Researcher Development Award (2022). She serves as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Climate, reviews for over 20 journals including Science and Nature Ecology and Evolution, and is a Scientific Steering Committee member for the Integrated Land Ecosystem-Atmosphere Processes Study (iLEAPS).
