Rabab Abdulhadi is an Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies and Race and Resistance Studies in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University, a position she has held since 2007. In the broader field of Social Science, she serves as the founding Director and Senior Scholar of the Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas (AMED) Studies Program. Her previous appointments include Director of the Center for Arab American Studies and Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn (2004–2006), Postdoctoral Faculty Fellow at New York University (2001–2003), and Assistant Professor of Sociology at the American University in Cairo (2000–2001). She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology (2000), M.Phil. (1998), and M.A. (1995) from Yale University, as well as a B.A. Summa Cum Laude in Sociology and Women’s Studies from Hunter College, City University of New York (1994).
Abdulhadi's academic interests encompass Arab and Arab American feminisms, gender, sexuality, and racism; Palestinian women’s activism; transnational feminisms; Islamophobia; and settler colonialism. She has produced over 80 articles and book chapters in seven languages. Notable publications include Arab and Arab American Feminisms: Gender, Violence and Belonging (Syracuse University Press, 2011), which she lead-edited and which won the 2012 Evelyn Shakir National Arab American Non-Fiction Book Award; Gender, Nation, and Belonging (editor of special issue, MIT Electronic Journal of Middle East Studies, 2005); “Israeli Settler Colonialism in Context: Celebrating (Palestinian) Death and Normalizing Gender and Sexual Violence” (Feminist Studies, 2020); and “The Palestinian Women’s Autonomous Movement: Emergence, Dynamics, and Challenges” (Gender & Society, 1998). Among her honors are the Georgina M. Smith Award from the American Association of University Professors (2020), Bay Area Visionary recognition from the National Women’s Studies Association (2019), Sterling Prize Fellowship from Yale University (1994–1996), and awards from Al-Awda, American Muslims for Palestine, and others. She is a co-founding editorial board member of the Islamophobia Studies Journal and holds advisory roles with Al-Shabaka and various academic and activist organizations.
