Rafiq Ahmad is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta, having joined the institution in May 2016. He serves as the Principal Investigator, Director, and Founder of the Smart & Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Laboratory (SMART Lab), previously known as the Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing, Design, and Automation (LIMDA). A registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with a PhD, Dr. Ahmad leads cutting-edge research at the intersection of smart manufacturing and sustainability, focusing on Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies.
His research specializations encompass smart manufacturing systems, integrating cyber-physical systems, artificial intelligence-driven automation, human-machine collaboration, and digital twins for intelligent processes. Key areas include industrial robotics for autonomous operations, utilizing computer vision, machine learning, and advanced robotics to perform tasks in hazardous environments with enhanced safety and efficiency. Dr. Ahmad's work in green technologies promotes zero-waste production through repair, remanufacturing, and recycling (3R) strategies, extending product lifecycles and reducing environmental footprints. He also pioneers sustainable production systems, such as aquaponics 4.0 learning factories that combine aquaculture and hydroponics for resource-efficient food production, minimizing water, energy, and fertilizer consumption. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Ahmad has led impactful projects including an innovative respirator during the COVID-19 pandemic, space waste recycling spinoffs, and contributions to global sustainable bioproducts initiatives. His lab includes over 160 members and alumni, more than 170 publications, over 50 events, and over 20 partnerships. He received the Edify Top 40 Under 40 Award in 2022 for societal innovations and engages in university initiatives like the Autonomous Systems Initiative and Nasseri School of Building Science and Engineering.
