Ralph Kelsey

Dr. Ralph Kelsey, a graduate of the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Dental Science obtained in 1983, has built an illustrious career in dentistry marked by extensive clinical experience and leadership in professional organizations. His professional journey includes three years serving with the Ministry of Defence and Aviation in Saudi Arabia, followed by practice in Central Queensland, and roles in regional hospital dental clinics at Nambour and Ipswich. Kelsey has held prominent positions such as President of the Australian Dental Association Queensland Branch in 2007 and immediate past president in 2016, President of the Australian Society of Endodontology, and Fellowship in the International College of Dentists. These roles underscore his commitment to advancing dental practice and policy in Queensland.

In March 2016, Dr. Kelsey was appointed Dental Services Team Leader at the University of Queensland School of Dentistry's satellite clinic located at Goondir Health Clinic in Dalby, representing a significant achievement for rural dental health services. This clinic, operated in partnership with Goondir Health Services, offers comprehensive care from a five-chair facility, with a particular emphasis on serving the region's substantial Indigenous population. In his role, Kelsey supervises dental services and mentors fifth-year Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) students during their clinical placements, providing them with practical experience in rural settings. Acting Head of School Associate Professor Pauline Ford highlighted, “We’re extremely fortunate to benefit from having someone of Dr Kelsey’s calibre and standing at the Dalby clinic,” noting his enthusiasm for contributing to future practitioners' development. Professor Laurence Walsh, a long-time colleague, praised Kelsey's compassion for country communities and his reputation for student mentorship, anticipating his advocacy for enhanced health focus in the Darling Downs region. Additionally, as ADAQ President, Kelsey endorsed findings from a 2015 UQ School of Dentistry study on fluoride benefits, observing a 26 percent reduction in decay on vulnerable child molar surfaces. His inclusion in the School of Dentistry's 2019 Research Report further affirms his contributions to the institution's clinical and educational endeavors.
