Ralph C. Martin is a retired professor in the Department of Plant Agriculture at the Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph. He earned a B.A. and an M.Sc. from Carleton University and a Ph.D. from MacDonald College at McGill University. In 2001, he founded the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada to coordinate university research and education on organic systems across the country. In 2011, he was appointed professor and Loblaw Chair in Sustainable Food Production at the University of Guelph. His research has focused on sustainable food production, including multiple cropping systems, nitrogen use efficiency, forage agronomy, pasture management, soil organic matter, reducing food waste, and adapting agriculture to climate change. He has contributed to numerous refereed publications on topics such as organic field crops, cover crops, and agroecosystem resilience. In 2019, he authored the book Food Security: From Excess to Enough, published by Dundurn Press. He also co-edited Managing Energy, Nutrients, and Pests in Organic Field Crops in 2014. Martin has influenced the field through his leadership in organic agriculture initiatives and collaborative research across disciplines.
His professional appointments have centered on advancing ecological and sustainable agriculture practices at the University of Guelph, where he emphasized producing sufficient food while preserving resources for future generations. Key areas of his work include service crops, cover crops, and improving soil health in temperate farming systems.
