William R. (Randy) Solly, MS, RRT, RPFT, AE-C, is an Assistant Professor in the Frances M. Maguire College of Nursing and Health Professions and Program Director of the Respiratory Care Program at Gwynedd Mercy University. He has served on the respiratory care program faculty since 2014 and brings over 25 years of experience as a registered respiratory therapist. Prior to his current role, Solly worked predominantly within the University of Pennsylvania Health System, where he conducted pulmonary diagnostic testing in specialized labs, assisted physicians with the Interventional Pulmonary team at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and performed pulmonary research. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he accumulated 20 years of clinical practice before transitioning fully to education over the subsequent decade. Solly earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Millersville University in 1994 and his Master of Science degree in Disaster Medicine and Management from Philadelphia University in 2011.
Solly's academic interests encompass pulmonary function testing, updated spirometry standards, interventional bronchoscopy, disaster medicine, and health care provider burnout, on which he has presented at local, state, and national levels. His publications include co-authoring the respiratory anatomy chapter in the comprehensive 60-chapter textbook Respiratory Care: Principles and Practice, adopted for use in the Respiratory Care Program, as well as articles published in journals such as Respiratory Care and Respirology. Solly holds expertise in respiratory care, pulmonary diagnostics, and bronchoscopy. For his contributions to allied health education, he has been inducted as a faculty member into the Alpha Eta Society, the National Honor Society for Allied Health Professionals, and the Lambda Beta Society, the National Honor Society for the respiratory care profession. Through his leadership and teaching, Solly prepares students for successful careers as respiratory therapists, emphasizing hands-on clinical skills and advanced credentialing.
