About Rashid

Professor Rashid Abu Al-Rub is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Khalifa University of Science and Technology. He currently leads the Advanced Digital & Additive Manufacturing (ADAM) Group and has served as Acting Chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Associate Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering at the university. Previously, he was Department Head of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. He has held faculty positions at Texas A&M University with joint appointments in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, and the Texas Transportation Institute. Earlier in his career, he was a Professor at Louisiana State University and at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Air Force Institute of Technology.

Professor Abu Al-Rub received his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in 2004, his M.Sc. from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2001, and his B.Sc. from the same institution in 1999. His primary research focuses on the development of macro/micro/nano-mechanics-based constitutive models and computational tools for advanced materials and structural systems, with particular emphasis on digital design, additive manufacturing, and 3D printing of multifunctional architected materials and composites for aerospace, defense, and automotive applications. He has published one book on Non-Local Damage and Plasticity, six patents, and over 300 publications in archival journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings. He has served as principal or co-principal investigator on more than 40 sponsored projects totaling over US$44 million. Among his honors are selection among the Google Scholar 100 Most Cited Authors in Engineering, inclusion in Stanford University’s lists of the world’s top 2% of career-long scientists in 2019 and 2021, multiple teaching excellence awards from Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University, the Ferdinand P. Beer and E. Russell Johnston Jr. Outstanding New Mechanics Educator Award from the American Society for Engineering Education in 2011, and Faculty Research Excellence Certificates of Commendation from Khalifa University in 2018 and 2020. He is a member of several professional organizations including AIAA, ASME, and ASCE, and serves on the editorial boards of journals in multi-scale computational mechanics.
