Ratbek Dzhumashev is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Monash Business School, Monash University, and serves as the Department Working Paper Coordinator. Following the completion of his PhD, he joined the department as a Lecturer and has held the position of Senior Lecturer since 2 January 2008. Previously, he consulted for the Asian Development Bank, BearingPoint, and the IFO Institute, advising government agencies on aspects of economic development, regulation reforms, and tax policy. He is affiliated with the Macro, International and Growth (MIG) research group in the Department of Economics.
His academic interests include the economics of corruption, financial economics, macroeconomics, economic growth, development economics, environmental economics, and population economics. Dzhumashev has authored numerous publications in high-impact journals such as Ecological Economics, Economic Modelling, Journal of Population Economics, Applied Energy, European Journal of Political Economy, World Development, and Empirical Economics. Among his key contributions are "Production, environment, and population growth" (Environmental and Resource Economics, 2025, accepted, with Kazakevitch), "The role of physical constraints on production" (Ecological Economics, 2024), "Social externalities, endogenous childcare costs, and fertility choice" (Journal of Population Economics, 2023, with Tursunalieva), "The impact of pandemic-induced uncertainty shock on tourism demand" (Current Issues in Tourism, 2023, with Hailemariam), "Carbon emissions, income inequality and economic development" (Empirical Economics, 2020, with Hailemariam and Shahbaz)—recipient of the Lawrence R. Klein Award in 2021—"Income inequality and economic growth: heterogeneity and nonlinearity" (Studies in Nonlinear Dynamics and Econometrics, 2020, with Hailemariam), "Foreign aid and the quality of economic institutions" (European Journal of Political Economy, 2021, with Hailemariam), "How does corruption affect public debt? An empirical analysis" (World Development, 2017, with Cooray and Schneider), and "The role of income uncertainty in the corruption-growth nexus" (The B.E. Journal of Economic Analysis & Policy, 2016). His scholarship addresses pivotal issues at the intersection of institutions, inequality, environmental sustainability, and macroeconomic policy.
