Raya Muttarak holds an MSc and DPhil in Sociology from the University of Oxford. She is Full Professor in the Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Bologna, with academic discipline STAT-03/A Demography. Her research interests include population, environment and sustainable development, population heterogeneity and forecasting, differential vulnerability and adaptive capacity, migration and mobility, and health, wellbeing and food security. She serves as principal investigator of the ERC Consolidator Grant POPCLIMA on Population Dynamics under Global Climate Change.
Muttarak has held positions including roles at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and has been appointed editor of Population and Development Review. She maintains affiliations with the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital. Her work focuses on the intersections of demographic processes with environmental and social factors, contributing to understanding of population dynamics in the context of global change.
