Associate Professor Rebecca Wyse is a behavioural scientist and Cancer Institute NSW Early Career Research Fellow in the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Newcastle, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Sydney, and a Graduate Certificate in Public Health from the University of New South Wales. Her career at the University of Newcastle began as a PhD Candidate in the School of Medicine and Public Health from 2008 to 2012, followed by Research Assistant from 2012 to 2014, and Research Fellow since 2014. Prior roles include Project Officer at Hunter New England Population Health in programs such as Good for Kids. Good for Life and Smoke Free Health Service, Clinical Outcomes Coordinator at The Northside Group, and Researcher at Eureka Strategic Research.
Rebecca Wyse specializes in developing digital behavioural interventions for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and asthma. Her expertise spans primary prevention in schools and communities, as well as secondary prevention and treatment in clinical settings, such as enhanced recovery after surgery. Key research areas include improving nutritional quality of school lunches via online canteen systems, healthy eating policies in childcare and schools, and digital support for cancer patients. She has received numerous awards, including the International Society of Behavioral Medicine Outstanding New Investigator Award in 2023, Hunter Cancer Research Alliance Best Rapid Fire Presentation and Consumer Choice Awards in 2022, Priority Research Centre Health Behaviour Supervision and Female ECR Awards in 2021 and 2020, and Early Career Researcher Award from the International Society of Behavioural Medicine in 2016. Major fellowships encompass the Cancer Institute NSW Early Career Research Fellowship (2021-2026), National Health & Medical Research Council Translating Research into Practice Fellowship, Heart Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship, and Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellowship (honorary). Notable publications include 'Long-term Effectiveness of a Multistrategy Behavioral Intervention to Increase the Nutritional Quality of Primary School Students’ Online Lunch Orders: 18-Month Follow-up of the Click & Crunch Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial' (2021), 'Consumer- and expert-driven design of digital asthma management platforms' (2024), and 'The effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a digital health intervention to support breast cancer patients prepare for and recover from surgery: a randomised controlled trial protocol' (2023). Her work aligns with the University of Newcastle's priorities of Better, Healthier Living and Connected Communities, and UN Sustainable Development Goal #3 – Good Health and Wellbeing.
