Rebekah Chapman serves as a Principal Senior Lecturer in the Biology Department at Georgia State University and holds the position of Faculty Coordinator for the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) in Environmental Science. She earned her Ph.D. in Ecology from the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia in 2009, with a focus on conservation and sustainable development during her graduate research. Chapman's academic career at Georgia State centers on instruction in biology, with particular emphasis on ecology, plant biology, conservation, sustainable development, and general biology courses. She is strongly committed to innovative teaching methods, including signature experience courses that utilize place-based learning, such as the Natural Environments of Georgia, which allows students to explore regional ecosystems firsthand. Her scholarly interests, as listed on Google Scholar, include ecology, biology, and plant physiology.
Chapman also oversees undergraduate internships within the department and supervises occasional research projects in ecology and plant biology. Her fieldwork portfolio includes conservation and restoration initiatives in Córdoba, Argentina as part of her doctoral work, studies in island ecology on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and various local projects in Atlanta, Georgia. She actively partners with faculty members and student organizations to promote ecological research and sustainability efforts both on the university campus and in surrounding communities. Chapman is instrumental in developing inquiry-based curricula for biological and ecological topics. As the community coordinator and a certified trainer for the Georgia Adopt a Stream program, she regularly engages in local stream monitoring activities and contributes to ecological and educational outreach programs that extend the university's impact beyond academia. Chapman leads the Tropical Island Ecology Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE), where students engage in assessment of coral reef recovery after significant storm damage. She represents Georgia State University on the University System of Georgia's Academic Committee for Biological Sciences.
