Rate My Professor Reginaldo Bertolo

Reginaldo Antonio Bertolo is an associate professor at the Instituto de Geociências of the Universidade de São Paulo. He holds a bachelor's degree in Geology from USP obtained in 1989, a master's degree in Geosciences with a focus on Mineral Resources and Hydrogeology from USP completed in 1996, and a PhD in the same field awarded in 2001 by USP. His doctoral research examined the hydrodynamics and hydrogeochemistry of the unsaturated zone of the Adamantina Aquifer in Urânia, São Paulo. Bertolo serves as a researcher at the Centro de Pesquisas de Águas Subterrâneas (CEPAS-USP) and coordinates the Graduate Program in Geosciences specializing in Mineral Resources and Hydrogeology at IGc-USP. His academic interests center on hydrogeology, groundwater geochemistry, pollution of aquifers including fractured systems by chlorinated solvents, urban aquifer contamination by nitrogen, pollution involving metals and emerging contaminants, and the management of complex contaminated areas. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Groundwater of the Alto Tietê Basin Committee and the academic committee of Rede Nicole Latin America. Bertolo has organized and participated in numerous national and international seminars and workshops on groundwater remediation, contaminated site management, and hydrogeology of fractured media. He previously worked as a hydrogeologist at ERM Environmental Resources Management and Ambiterra Ltda.

Throughout his career at USP since 2004, Bertolo has contributed to research projects addressing groundwater pollution and management challenges in urban and fractured aquifer settings. His work supports efforts in environmental protection and sustainable water resource use, drawing on extensive field investigations and geochemical analyses. Bertolo engages with professional networks focused on subsurface environmental issues and has presented findings at conferences including those organized by the International Association of Hydrogeologists and Brazilian groundwater symposia. His expertise informs technical discussions on aquifer characterization, monitored natural attenuation, and policy-related aspects of groundwater protection in Brazil.
