Dr. Renae Hovey is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Western Australia, affiliated with the UWA Oceans Institute. She obtained her PhD in Marine Ecology from the University of Western Australia in 2010, with a focus on the ecophysiology of seagrasses in restored estuarine meadows. Her research explores the influence of physical and biotic ocean environments on the population dynamics and distribution of marine benthic organisms, integrating biology, spatial ecology, oceanography, and fishery science for mechanistic insights into marine populations and communities. Hovey utilizes GIS and statistical modeling to generate benthic habitat maps aiding fisheries management and seagrass genetic studies. Her ongoing work addresses resilience of marine communities and ecosystem functioning under global change, including spatially explicit identification of climate refugia and assessments of plastic distribution and impacts in nearshore and estuarine environments. She collaborates with Traditional Owners on intertidal habitat monitoring in Indigenous Protected Areas, aligning research with Indigenous knowledge, and engages in community-led seagrass restoration to build local stewardship.
In her teaching role, Hovey coordinates the Marine Biology major in the Bachelor of Marine Science, Master of Marine Biology, and combined programs, and leads units such as SCIE3304 Field Techniques in Marine Science, ENVT3306 Coastal Conservation and Management, BIOL4411 Marine Field Studies, and BIOL4408 Marine Ecology. She has secured grants like the 2015 TL strategic fund to improve marine science education. Key publications include 'Climate-driven regime shift of a temperate marine ecosystem' (Science, 2016), 'The central role of dispersal in the maintenance and persistence of seagrass populations' (BioScience, 2012), 'Extreme climate events lower resilience of foundation seagrass at edge of biogeographical range' (Journal of Ecology, 2014), and 'Plastic contamination in commercially valuable decapods caught near a major Australian urban centre' (Environmental Pollution, 2026). Amassing over 4,360 citations on Google Scholar, her research impacts marine ecology and conservation. Hovey co-chairs the School of Biological Sciences Community and Outreach Committee and serves on its Learning and Teaching Committee, School Board, and OceanWorks.
