Rhys Foster serves as Tautiaki-Piki and Deputy Warden at Te Whare Whakamaru o Te Rangihīroa, a residential college operated by the University of Otago's Campus and Collegiate Life Services in Dunedin. Named in honor of Sir Peter Buck (Te Rangihīroa), the university's first Māori graduate in 1904, the college offers students a safe, comfortable living environment conducive to study, emphasizing inclusivity, care for others, and freedom from discrimination or bullying. Residents benefit from a supportive community that encourages responsibility, cooperation, and participation in college life.
In his role, Rhys Foster oversees the college's Academic Programme and the Kaiāwhina (sub-wardens), who provide manaakitanga, assist with events, and support residents' academic, personal, and social needs through conversations and referrals to services. He delivers pastoral care and hauora (wellbeing) support to kainoho (residents). Living onsite with an office next to the Tautiaki (Warden), Rhys Foster ensures accessibility and contributes to maintaining a positive atmosphere for effective learning and inter-college activities, including access to study spaces such as Te Punawai and Te Titōhea.
