About Richard

Richard Heaney is Emeritus Professor in the UWA Business School at the University of Western Australia. Retired and living in Canberra, he served as Professor of Finance from 2011 to 2017 and as Winthrop Professor of Finance, Accounting and Finance in the Business School. He also acted as Associate Dean for Research and Research Training from 2013 to 2016. His earlier academic appointments include Professor of Finance at RMIT University (mid-2001 to 2010), Associate Professor (Reader) at the Australian National University (1997 to mid-2001), and lecturer positions at the University of Queensland, ANU, and University of Newcastle. Prior to entering academia full-time, Heaney worked as an accountant at Seco Titan Pty Ltd (1982-1986) and as a programmer analyst at NCR Australia (1973-1978).

Heaney's academic interests center on finance, including asset pricing, derivative pricing, company valuation, investor behaviour, corporate governance, commodity pricing, portfolio theory, and finance education. He has contributed to Australian Research Council (ARC)-funded projects and spoken at events like UWA Research Week 2016. With 53 research outputs and approximately 1,900 citations, his influential works encompass "The impact of undergraduate personal finance education on individual financial literacy, attitudes and intentions" (2019), "Bubbles in the Australian housing market" (2017), "Value of investment: Evidence from the oil and gas industry" (2018), "The information content of director trading: evidence from acquisition announcements in Australia" (2020), "Director trading, or lack thereof, and acquiring firm performance: Evidence from Australian mergers and acquisitions" (2016), "Investment Portfolios and Three Dimensions of Real Estate Investment: An Australian Perspective" (2015), "Real options and the value of oil and gas firms: An empirical analysis" (2017), and "An event study analysis of oil and gas firm acreage and reserve acquisitions" (2016). His research has significantly impacted understanding of financial markets and investment decisions.
