Professor Richard Lindley is Professor of Geriatric Medicine at Sydney Medical School, Westmead Clinical School, University of Sydney. He earned his MBBS and MD from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, and holds fellowships FRCP(Edin) and FRACP. In 2003, he was appointed Moran Foundation for Older Australians Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Sydney, following his role as Honorary Senior Lecturer in Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh from 1996 to 2003. He serves as Professorial Fellow at The George Institute for Global Health since 2010 and maintains clinical practice in acute geriatric medicine, rehabilitation, and stroke at Blacktown Hospital, Sydney. As Deputy Head (Research) of the Department of Aged Care and Rehabilitation at Westmead Hospital, he leads the Centre for Research Excellence in Stroke Trials.
Lindley's research centers on improving treatments for older patients, especially those with stroke, through large-scale international clinical trials. He directs projects such as the ENCHANTED trial evaluating low-dose alteplase and intensive blood pressure lowering in acute ischemic stroke, the ATTEND trial on family-led rehabilitation in India, the OPTIMIST trial on post-thrombolysis monitoring, and contributions to IST-3 and INTERACT2. His work has shaped national stroke guidelines in Australia and Scotland and established new standards for stroke care in Australia. With over 26,000 citations and 473 publications, key works include 'Rapid Blood-Pressure Lowering in Patients with Acute Intracerebral Hemorrhage' (INTERACT2, NEJM, 2013), IST-3 results (Lancet, 2012), and ENCHANTED outcomes. He is Associate Editor of the Australasian Journal on Ageing and Honorary Overseas Member of the British Association of Neurologists. Research interests include stroke recovery, frailty, hypertension management, thrombolysis safety, and trials in low-resource settings.
