Professor McGee's research specializations include paediatric endocrinology, clinical epidemiology, bias, diversity, equity, journalology, meta-research, open science, outcomes, statistics, study design, systematic reviews, and medical education, with primary fields in paediatrics (80%), endocrinology (10%), and epidemiological methods (10%). He has secured over $2 million in funding from NHMRC and NSW Health, leading international collaboratives such as co-chairing CIRCAN, co-founding INSPIRE, and chairing the Australia and New Zealand Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Website and Patient Resources Committee. With over 65 peer-reviewed publications and more than 500 co-authors, key works include 'Research Prioritization Studies in Paediatric Hospital Medicine: A Scoping Review' (2026), 'Prevalence and presentation of lower limb neurovascular complications in children with diabetes' (2025), 'Non-urgent Emergency Department presentations by pre-school aged children. Opportunities for new clinical pathways to child and family health' (2025), 'Re-imagining Leadership in Paediatrics: Promoting Diversity and Visibility in a Global Context' (2024), and 'The SONG Handbook' (2017). He was recognized as one of the world’s top 2% scientists in 2024 by Stanford University and Elsevier, and has received awards such as the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing Mid-Career Teaching Award (2022), Clinical Leadership and Engagement Award (2022), The Kilhams for best JMO teaching (2018), and Lorimer Teaching Award for best medical student teaching (2018). In medical education, he leads paediatric education at the University of Newcastle, serves as an RACP Paediatric Divisional Clinical Exam examiner, Australian Medical Council examiner, and contributes to committees including the New South Wales Health Paediatric Diabetes Models of Care Taskforce.
