Richard Morris

Richard Morris earned his Ph.D. in sociology from The Ohio State University in 1952. His dissertation, 'Social Differentiation: A Demonstration in Theory Construction,' applied the paradigm method to develop a general model of social stratification. Following graduation, he joined the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a faculty member in sociology, serving as professor from 1953 to 1976. Morris held prominent administrative positions at UCLA, including Acting Dean of the School of Social Welfare and Chairman of the Department of Sociology. He also served as associate editor and book review editor of the American Sociological Review.

Morris's research focused on social stratification, urban race relations, and national status in the adjustment of foreign students. He conducted fieldwork as a Fulbright scholar in the Netherlands during 1963-1964. Notable publications include the book The Two-Way Mirror: National Status in Foreign Students' Adjustment (1960) and The White Reaction Study (1967). He contributed numerous articles to leading journals, such as the American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Sociological Inquiry, and Sociology and Social Research. Morris's work advanced theoretical and empirical approaches in social science.
