Richard J. Reddick is a professor in the Program in Higher Education Leadership in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Texas at Austin College of Education. He has served as the inaugural Senior Vice Provost for Curriculum and Enrollment and Dean of the Undergraduate College since 2022. Previously, he was the inaugural associate dean for equity, community engagement, and outreach for the College of Education from 2019 to 2022, professor since 2014, and assistant director of the Plan II Honors Program from 2014 to 2021. Reddick joined the faculty in 2007 as an assistant professor. He holds faculty courtesy appointments in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies and the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies, and is a fellow at the Institute for Urban Policy Research and Analysis. He co-chaired the Council for Racial and Ethnic Equity and Diversity from 2015 to 2019, served on the Signature Course Advisory Committee, and was part of the inaugural Provost's Distinguished Service Academy cohort. Reddick also serves as faculty co-chair for the Institute for Educational Management and teaches in the Institute for Management and Leadership in Education at Harvard University, where he was a visiting associate professor in 2018.
Reddick earned a B.A. in Plan II Honors concentrating in African American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995, an Ed.M. in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1998, and an Ed.D. in Higher Education from Harvard in 2007. Prior to academia, he taught elementary and middle school in Houston's Fifth Ward as a Teach For America corps member and worked in student affairs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, and Emory University. His research examines experiences of faculty of color at predominantly white institutions, mentoring relationships between faculty and Black students, work-life balance in academia, and factors impacting the African American experience in higher education. Key publications include the book Restorative Resistance in Higher Education: Leading in an Era of Racial Awakening and Reckoning (Harvard Education Press, 2023); co-authored books A New Look at Black Families (Rowman & Littlefield, 2010) and The Black College Mystique (Rowman & Littlefield, 2006); and the article Surveillance and Sacrifice: Gender Differences in the Mentoring Patterns of Black Professors at Predominantly White Research Universities (American Educational Research Journal, 2011). He has published dozens of journal articles and book chapters, presented at American Educational Research Association and Association for the Study of Higher Education meetings, and appeared in media including NPR, PBS, BBC, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. Awards include the 2025 Texas Exes Distinguished Alumnus Award, 2021-2022 President's Award for Global Learning, 2019 Tower Award for Outstanding Community Based Learning Professor, 2018 Austin L.E.A.D.S. Award, 2012 Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award, and Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation Career Enhancement Fellowship (2010-2011).
