Professor Rikki Jones is a Professor in Nursing in the School of Health at the University of New England, a position held since 2017. She graduated from the University of New England in 2001 with a Bachelor of Nursing degree, completed her postgraduate year at Tamworth Base Hospital, and earned her PhD in Nursing from the University of New England in 2021. Possessing over 17 years of clinical nursing experience in emergency nursing, community health, rural and remote nursing, and theatre nursing, she integrates practical expertise into her academic and research endeavors. Jones supervises PhD, MPhil, and Honours students and leads mentoring for staff in research, curriculum development, and design. She received the University of New England Early Career Researcher Award in 2024.
Her primary research areas encompass rural health, with a focus on improving rural healthcare services delivery and access, mental health among first responders, nursing staff, and nursing students, violence including sexual violence, intimate partner/domestic violence, family violence, and drug and alcohol-related violence, as well as the impact of shame and stigma on health. Key publications include 'Interventions and strategies for mental illness in first responders and their digital adaptations for rural health' (2025, International Journal of Mental Health Nursing), 'Sexual Violence and Assault in Rural Australia: A Scoping Review of Regional, Rural, and Remote Contexts' (2025, Trauma, Violence, & Abuse), 'A Scoping Review of Trauma, Mental Health and First Responders in Australia' (2024, International Journal of Mental Health Nursing), 'The shame of sexual violence towards women in rural areas' (2024, International Journal of Mental Health Nursing), 'First responder mental health, traumatic events and rural and remote experience' (2024, Journal of Advanced Nursing), and 'Australian nursing students’ experiences of workplace violence during clinical placement: A cross-sectional study' (2024, Journal of Advanced Nursing). Jones teaches governance, legal and ethical aspects of nursing, emergency and acute care nursing, violence and vulnerable populations, deteriorating patient management, and research methods.
