Muhamad Risqi U. Saputra, known professionally as Risqi Saputra, serves as Associate Professor in Data Science at Monash University Indonesia, a position to which he was promoted in August 2024 after joining as Assistant Professor in August 2021. He completed his DPhil (PhD) in Computer Science at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, where he also worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Cyber-physical Systems group and Systems Research Group within the Department of Computer Science. Earlier, he earned his Master of Engineering (MEng) and Bachelor (BEng, ST) degrees from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. His industry experience encompasses co-founding the educational-technology startup lexipalindonesia.com, which won the Liputan 6 Awards in 2016 and was selected as one of 107 Innovators Indonesia by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education in 2015, as well as serving as Senior Data Scientist at Jakarta Smart City.
Saputra's research centers on the intersection of machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and cyber-physical systems, with applications to navigation, positioning, mapping, object detection, and semantic segmentation. He extends this expertise to interdisciplinary domains such as smart cities, health science, assistive technology, disaster prevention and management, and environmental monitoring. Key publications include "Graph-based Thermal-Inertial SLAM with Probabilistic Neural Networks" in IEEE Transactions on Robotics (2021), "DeepTIO: A Deep Thermal-Inertial Odometry with Visual Hallucination" in IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters presented at ICRA (2020), "Visual SLAM and Structure from Motion in Dynamic Environments: A Survey" in ACM Computing Surveys (2018), "Distilling Knowledge From a Deep Pose Regressor Network" at IEEE/CVF International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV, 2019), and recent works such as "Multi-modal deep learning approaches to semantic segmentation of mining footprints with multispectral satellite imagery" in Remote Sensing of Environment (2025) and "A holistic framework for examining complex problems in energy transition solutions" in One Earth (2025). He has garnered awards from software development competitions, including Gold Medal at the International ICT Innovative Services Contest (InnoServe) in Taiwan (2012), Winner of Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA) in Brunei Darussalam (2012), Indonesia ICT Awards (INAICTA) (2012), Bronze Award at ASEAN ICT Award (AICTA) in Singapore (2013), and Second Winner at Microsoft Imagine Cup Indonesia (2012). In 2022, he received the Google Research Scholar Award. Saputra teaches postgraduate courses such as ITI9136 Algorithms and Programming Foundations in Python, ITI9004 Mathematical Foundations for Data Science and AI, and ITI5125 IT Research Methods, and he is currently accepting PhD students.
