Dr Roannie Ng Shiu is a Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland, where she serves as Co-Director of Te Poutoko Ora a Kiwa | Centre for Pacific and Global Health. She is also the Pasifika Medical Association Senior Research Fellow in the Office of the Associate Dean Pacific. Dr Ng Shiu joined the University of Auckland in 2021. She holds a PhD from the University of Auckland awarded in 2011 for her thesis titled "It's Like Going To The Moon": The Experiences of Samoan Tertiary Health Students at The University of Auckland. Her research focuses on Pacific health equity, Pacific health workforce development, the experiences of Pacific tertiary students, and climate change impacts on health in Small Island Developing States. She has 15 years of experience specialising in human geography and Pacific health, education, and development, with expertise in qualitative, mixed-methods, longitudinal, and cross-sectional research designs. Dr Ng Shiu previously held research positions at the Australian National University, including as the inaugural Pasifika Australia Research Fellow, where she led Pacific capacity-building initiatives and contributed to large-scale Pacific development research projects. She also serves as Principal Analyst for Malatest International, specialising in evaluation and market research. Her work spans the Pacific region, Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, including recent collaborations on climate change and health policy with the University of the West Indies and the Lancet Countdown.
Dr Ng Shiu is of Samoan descent from Leone, Apia, and Savaia, Lefaga. She contributes to efforts increasing the Pacific health workforce in Aotearoa New Zealand through recruitment and retention of Pacific health students and delivers high-quality Pacific health equity research. Her professional background includes strong skills in project management, stakeholder engagement, and evidence-based policy development.
