About Robert

Dr. Robert Boland serves as Clinical Associate Professor in the Discipline of Physiotherapy, Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. His academic qualifications include a BAppSc in Physiotherapy (1984), GradDipAppSc in Manipulative Physiotherapy (1989), and PhD (2000). A Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapy (FACP) since 2007 in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Boland has a distinguished career in clinical practice, education, and research. He has been a lecturer at the University of Sydney since 1988 and coordinated the Master of Health Sciences (Manipulative Physiotherapy) program from 2004 to 2009, overseeing curriculum design, classroom and clinical teaching in advanced manipulative physiotherapy for the cervico-thoracic spine/upper limbs and thoraco-lumbar spine/lower limbs, student supervision, assessment, and successful accreditation by Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Australia and the Australian Physiotherapy Association. Clinically, he served as musculoskeletal/manipulative physiotherapist for the Royal Australian Navy (1991-2005), in private practice (1990-1995), and since 2004 as specialist clinician at Fairfield Hospital. He holds positions as Specialist Physiotherapist for NSW Health and Independent Physiotherapy Panel Appointee for the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA), NSW.

Boland conducted post-doctoral research as Neurology Fellow at Neuroscience Research Australia (2006-2011), investigating spinal cord injuries and motor function adaptation. He is a member of the University of Sydney's Neuro-Musculoskeletal Research Collaborative. His research specializations encompass compensable injuries, chronic pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder injuries, peripheral nerve compression, low back pain, neck pain, nerve function, spinal pain rehabilitation, obesity, and arthritis. Notable publications co-authored by Boland include "Adaptation of motor function after spinal cord injury: novel insights into spinal shock" (Brain, 2011), "Neurophysiological index as a biomarker for ALS progression: validity of mixed-effects models" (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, 2011), Pavlovic et al., "Effect of weight-loss diets prior to elective surgery on postoperative outcomes in obesity" (Clinical Obesity, 2021), Brady et al., "A mixed-methods investigation into patients’ decisions to attend an Emergency Department for chronic pain" (Pain Medicine, 2021), and recent works on cultural mentoring programs for chronic musculoskeletal pain management (BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2023; BMJ Open, 2023). Boland has presented courses in musculoskeletal physiotherapy in Australia and overseas and maintains teaching responsibilities in manipulative physiotherapy for undergraduate and entry-level masters students.
