About Robert J.
Robert J. Banks, PhD (University of Cambridge), is a leading scholar in Theology at Macquarie University, where he commenced as Senior Lecturer in Ancient History in 1974 and later served as the inaugural Director and Dean of the Christian Studies Institute from 1999. He currently holds positions as visiting professor and associate at the Centre for the History of Christian Thought and Experience. Banks' academic background includes studies in arts and law at the University of Sydney, an MTh from King's College, University of London, and a PhD in New Testament studies from Clare College, Cambridge, with a thesis on Jesus' attitude to the Law. His career also encompasses a Research Fellowship in the History of Ideas Unit at the Australian National University, where he contributed to theological programs for lay people and home-based congregations. From 1989, he was Foundation Professor in the Ministry of the Laity at Fuller Theological Seminary, introducing the Master of Arts in Christian Leadership and a Doctorate in Practical Theology, founding the Coalition for Ministry in Daily Life, and serving as the first executive director of the DePree Leadership Center.
Banks specializes in practical theology, New Testament community life, particularly early house churches, Christian leadership, and the theology of work and daily vocation. Among his extensive publications are Jesus and the Law in the Synoptic Tradition (1975), Paul's Idea of Community: The Early House Churches in Their Historical Setting (1980; revised 1994, third edition 2020), The Tyranny of Time (1983), God the Worker: Journeys into the Mind, Heart, and Imagination of God (1992), Reenvisioning Theological Education: Exploring a Missional Alternative to Current Models (1999), Reviewing Leadership: A Christian Evaluation of Current Approaches (2004; revised and expanded 2016 with Bernice M. Ledbetter and David C. Greenhalgh), and recent titles including Transforming Daily Work into a Divine Vocation (2023) and The Versatility of Paul: Artisan Missionary, Community Builder, Pastoral Educator (2023). He has edited volumes such as Reconciliation and Hope (1974) and The Complete Book of Everyday Christianity (1997 with R. Paul Stevens). Banks' influence is evidenced by the Festschrift The Bible and the Business of Life: Essays in Honour of Robert J. Banks's Sixty-Fifth Birthday (2004, edited by Simon Carey Holt and Gordon Preece), and his works have garnered Book of the Year awards in Australia, Canada, and the United States.
