About Robert

Robert Milazzo serves as Assistant Professor and Media Production Sequence Coordinator in the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture at Virginia Commonwealth University. He holds an M.F.A. in Film from Vermont College of Fine Arts. As an educator and creator, Milazzo founded The Modern School of Film, a film and media educational studio that has produced hundreds of masterclasses and educational events across the United States, Asia, Europe, the UK, and South America. He also created the award-winning documentary podcasts ASSEMBLY and MURMUR, which explore moments in time as they become legacy. His professional journey encompasses filmmaking, theater direction, and adjunct teaching at universities in New York, where he developed a passion for teaching that emphasizes continuous learning and real-world application.

Milazzo's pedagogical approach at VCU embodies the intersection of creative practice and innovative education, rooted in a philosophy of never graduating from learning. Inspired by feedback from senior film and media students desiring post-graduation education, he established The Modern School of Film using minimal resources through bartering, equipment lending, and curricula featuring public-facing masters as instructors. The school has expanded to six continents, fostering lifelong skills in media production. At VCU, he empowers students to undertake entrepreneurial projects, including forming production companies, producing documentaries with input from industry professionals, and assembling albums. His classes promote empathy, purpose-driven creativity, and boundary-pushing initiatives that prepare students for professional success in media, reflecting the untethered yet interconnected future of the field.
