About Robert

Professor Robert Minasian serves as Professor Emeritus and Chair Professor in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, at the University of Sydney. He obtained his B.E. degree and Ph.D. from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and his M.Sc. degree from University College London, U.K. As the Founding Director of the Fibre-optics and Photonics Laboratory at the University of Sydney, he has pioneered advancements in microwave photonics and photonic signal processing. His seminal contributions are evidenced by authorship of one of the top 1% most highly cited papers worldwide in his field. Professor Minasian has produced over 400 research publications, including numerous invited papers in leading journals such as IEEE Transactions and Optica journals. He has presented 84 plenary, keynote, and invited talks at major international conferences, underscoring his influence in the global photonics community. His work has significantly impacted technologies for wideband signal processing, sensing, and applications in areas like 5G and IoT, as highlighted in his keynote addresses and collaborations.

Professor Minasian's career encompasses extensive leadership and service to the academic field. He has served as Associate Editor for Optical Fiber Technology and participated on countless program, technical, and steering committees for international conferences. Additionally, he has contributed to Australian research governance through membership on the Australian Research Council and the Research Evaluation Committee for the Excellence in Research for Australia initiative. His distinguished achievements have earned him the ATERB Medal for Outstanding Investigator in Telecommunications from the Australian Telecommunications and Electronics Research Board. He holds Life Fellowship of the IEEE (FIEEE), Fellowship of Optica (FOSA), Fellowship of EURASC (FEURASC), and Fellowship of the Royal Society of New South Wales (FRSN). Internationally acknowledged as an authority in photonics, Professor Minasian's ongoing involvement includes affiliations with the University of Sydney Nano Institute and collaborative funded research projects in photonic technologies.
