About Robert

Robert Tibshirani is Professor of Biomedical Data Science and of Statistics at Stanford University. His academic background includes a B.Math. in Statistics and Computer Science from the University of Waterloo in 1979, an M.Sc. in Statistics from the University of Toronto in 1980, and a Ph.D. in Statistics from Stanford University in 1984 advised by Bradley Efron. Tibshirani's career history spans faculty positions at the University of Toronto from 1985 to 1998, advancing from Assistant Professor to Professor in the Departments of Statistics and Public Health Sciences, including NSERC University Research Fellowships. Since 1998, he has been at Stanford, initially as Professor in the Department of Health Research and Policy and Statistics until 2015, and subsequently as Professor of Biomedical Data Science and Statistics.

Tibshirani's research specializations include applied statistics, biostatistics, data mining, and problems in biology, genomics, medicine, and industry; he collaborates with Balasubramanian Narasimhan on software for genomics and proteomics. He co-authored key books: Generalized Additive Models (Trevor Hastie, 1990), An Introduction to the Bootstrap (Bradley Efron, 1993), The Elements of Statistical Learning (Trevor Hastie, Jerome Friedman, 2001; second edition 2009), An Introduction to Statistical Learning (Gareth James, Daniela Witten, Trevor Hastie, 2013), and Statistical Learning with Sparsity (Trevor Hastie, Martin Wainwright, 2015). Influential publications feature 'Regression Shrinkage and Selection via the Lasso' (Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B, 1996). His contributions to Lasso and sparsity methods have shaped high-dimensional data analysis and statistical learning, garnering over 600,000 Google Scholar citations. Major awards encompass COPSS Presidents' Award (1996), CRM-SSC Prize (2000), National Academy of Sciences election (2012), Statistical Society of Canada Gold Medal (2012), Royal Society Fellowship (2019), ISI Founders of Statistics Prize (2021), COPSS Distinguished Achievement Award and Lectureship (2024), WNAR Outstanding Impact Award (2024), and Senior Leo Breiman Award (2024). He holds editorial roles including Associate Editor for Annals of Statistics (1998–) and Annals of Applied Statistics (2006–).
