About Roberto

Dr. Roberto H. Esposto is a Senior Lecturer and Spanish Major Convenor in the School of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, at the University of Queensland. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy, Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Postgraduate Diploma, and Bachelor of Arts from La Trobe University. Esposto's research centers on 20th-century Argentinean literature and the historical novel, Latin American literature, and Latin American intellectual tradition, with particular emphasis on decolonial thought. His scholarship explores Argentinean and Latin American cultural identity and intellectual history, examining how intellectuals from situated perspectives address the colonial legacy underpinning Western modernity. He is an internationally recognized expert on the Argentine novelist and diplomat Abel Posse (1934-2023), publishing key works such as Abel Posse: senderos de un caminante solitario (2013) and editing Nuevas lecturas críticas de la obra de Abel Posse (2023) with Romain Magras. Esposto has also advanced understanding of philosopher Günther Rodolfo Kusch (1922-1979), author of Rodolfo Kusch, um convite (2025), Kusch. Una invitacion (2023), and Rodolfo Kusch, actualidad de un pensamiento americano (2018). Additionally, he has highlighted the poetry of Hugo Caamaño (1923-2015) through the edited volume Hugo Caamaño, poeta de mundo propio (2022), published by the Argentinean Academy of Letters, and chapters like La razón poética y la lógica de la negación en la poesía de Hugo Caamaño (2024).

In recognition of his contributions to 20th-century Argentinean literature, Esposto was nominated Corresponding Fellow of the Argentinean Academy of Letters in 2015, the first Australian Hispanist honored by one of the twenty-four academies of the Spanish language. Since 2003, he has authored the bestselling Lonely Planet Latin American Spanish Phrasebook and Dictionary, reaching its 10th edition in 2023 and translated into French and Italian, significantly fostering Spanish language learning globally. His journal articles include La crisis ambiental como crisis cultural (2024) in Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispanicos and Un continente en llamas (2022) in Revista Poliedro. Esposto regularly engages with Latin America through conferences in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. His broader publications encompass book chapters on topics such as Rodolfo Kusch's philosophical anthropology and Martin Heidegger's presence in Abel Posse's work, influencing decolonial thought, literary studies, and cultural analysis.
