Professor Rodney Baber is a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. He obtained his BPharm and BSc degrees in 1964 and his MBBS in 1981 from the University of Sydney. Baber has built a distinguished career in obstetrics and gynaecology, with a particular focus on women's midlife health. He heads the Menopause and Menstrual Disorders Clinic at Royal North Shore Hospital and has progressed through academic roles at the University of Sydney, serving as Clinical Senior Lecturer from 1995 to 2004 and Clinical Associate Professor from 2004, advancing to his current professorial position.
His research specializations encompass menopausal hormone therapy including its risks, benefits, and cardiovascular effects; management of symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats; premature ovarian insufficiency; osteoporosis; endometriosis and pregnancy outcomes; vulvovaginal atrophy; androgen therapies; and breast cancer survivorship issues. Baber has contributed to numerous influential publications, such as the '2016 IMS Recommendations on women’s midlife health and menopause hormone therapy' (2016), 'Global Consensus Position Statement on the Use of Testosterone Therapy for Women' (2019), 'Updated 2013 International Menopause Society recommendations on menopausal hormone therapy and preventive strategies for midlife health' (2013), 'Menopausal symptoms in breast cancer survivors: Management update' (2013), 'Menopausal hot flushes and night sweats: Where are we now?' (2011), and 'International Menopause Society (IMS) recommendations and key messages on women’s midlife health and menopause' (2025). He edited Climacteric as Editor-in-Chief from 2016 to 2024 and chaired the Scientific Programme Committee for the 2024 World Congress on Menopause.
Baber’s leadership is evidenced by his roles as Past President and Life Member of both the Australasian Menopause Society and the International Menopause Society. His honors include the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) awarded in 2018 for significant service to medicine in obstetrics and gynaecology, the RANZCOG Distinguished Service Medal, IMS Lifetime Achievement Award, and IMS Distinguished Service Award.
