Rate My Professor Rodney Tyers

Rodney Tyers is Winthrop Professor, Senior Honorary Research Fellow, and Emeritus Professor in the UWA Business School at the University of Western Australia, a position he has held since 2009. He holds a B.Eng (Hons) and M.Eng.Sci from the University of Melbourne, and an MS and PhD from Harvard University. He is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (FASSA), elected in 2019. His distinguished career includes serving as Professor of Economics in the College of Business and Economics at the Australian National University from 2001 to 2009, Reader in the Department of Economics at ANU from 1993 to 2001, Senior Lecturer in Economics at ANU from 1990 to 1993, Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Adelaide from 1987 to 1990, Research Fellow at the National Centre for Development Studies at ANU from 1984 to 1987, Research Fellow in the Department of Economics, Research School of Pacific Studies at ANU from 1982 to 1984, and Research Associate at the Resource Systems Institute, East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii in 1980-1981 and 1978-1979. He also holds an adjunct professorship at the Australian National University.

Professor Tyers is a specialist in applied international economics. His research applies economic modelling to issues in international economics and international finance, with emphasis on the global implications of Asian macroeconomic policies, growth performance, and financial market behaviour. Key research areas encompass secular stagnation, financial volatility and global macroeconomic performance; global economic interdependence with China; macroeconomic policy coordination; the Chinese economic transition and its implications; Japan and its potential to escape stagnation; and new approaches to modelling global trade and finance. Notable publications include the book 'Disarray in World Food Markets: A Quantitative Assessment' (1992, with K. Anderson), 'China's Exchange Rate Policy: The Case for Greater Flexibility' (2003, with I. Roberts), 'Demographic Change and Policy Responses: Implications for the Global Economy' (2007, with Q. Shi), 'China's Real Exchange Rate Puzzle' (with J. Golley), 'Asset Arbitrage and the Price of Oil' (2012, with V. Arora), and 'China's Gender Imbalance and its Economic Performance' (2012, with J. Golley).
