About Roisin

Associate Professor Roisin McGrath is an Associate Professor of Oral Health at the Melbourne Dental School, University of Melbourne, part of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. She serves as Director of the Bachelor of Oral Health Program and Divisional Lead for Population and Oral Health. McGrath holds a Diploma in Dental Hygiene (DipDH), Diploma in Dental Therapy (DipDT), Graduate Certificate in International Health (GC-INTLHL), Graduate Certificate in University Teaching (GCertUniTeach), Master of Public Health (MPH) focusing on sexual health, and a PhD in oral health promotion from the University of Melbourne. With over 30 years of experience in oral health, she qualified as a dental assistant, dental hygienist, and dental therapist, and has served as a clinical educator and lecturer. She is a licensed Mental Health First Aid Instructor and Board Director of Oral Health Alumni Australia.

McGrath's research specializations include oral health promotion, mental health and psychological distress among dental practitioners, oral hygiene care for hospitalised patients such as those with stroke, and oral cancer screening practices among oral health professionals. Key publications include 'Oral cancer screening practices of oral health professionals in Australia' (2017), 'Oral health promotion practices of Australian community mental health services' (2021), 'Mental health, psychological distress and burnout in Australian dental practitioners' (2022), 'Factors associated with suicidal ideation and suicide attempts by Australian dental practitioners' (2023), and 'Impact of rehabilitation with dental implants on the quality of life of patients undergoing maxillofacial reconstruction: a systematic review' (2024). She chaired the organising committee for the 21st International Symposium on Dental Hygiene held in Brisbane in 2019, welcoming over 1,100 delegates from 34 countries. Her contributions extend to committee roles and public engagement in advancing oral health equity and collaborative practice.
