About Rory

Rory Hyde is Associate Professor in Architecture (Curatorial Design and Practice) in the Melbourne School of Design, Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. He studied architecture at RMIT University in Melbourne and completed his PhD there on the impact of new technology on small architectural practice, titled Expanding Design in Small Practice: Emerging tools, Strategies and Organisational Structures. His academic interests center on new forms of design practice for the public good, architecture, urbanism, and redefining the role of the contemporary designer. Hyde has worked as a designer for various architecture practices and institutions in Australia and abroad, including ARM, BKK, MVRDV, Volume, Mediamatic, and NAi. From 2003 to 2013, he co-hosted the weekly radio show The Architects on Triple R, which was awarded the Australian Institute of Architects Award for Architecture in the Media and represented Australia at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale.

From 2013 to 2020, Hyde was Curator of Contemporary Architecture and Urbanism at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where he co-curated exhibitions including All of This Belongs to You (2015) and The Future Starts Here (2018), and contributed to the Rapid Response Collecting project. He also served as Design Advocate for the Mayor of London. His key publications include Future Practice: Conversations from the Edge of Architecture (Routledge, 2012) and Architects After Architecture: Alternative Pathways for Practice, co-edited with Harriet Harriss and Roberta Marcaccio (Routledge, 2020); both received the Australian Institute of Architects prize for architecture in the media. Hyde's writing has appeared in The Economist, The Guardian, Harvard Design Magazine, Domus, and a regular column in Architecture Australia; he guest-edited Architecture Australia 110:4 (2021) on suburbia. At the University of Melbourne, he coordinates Design Thesis studios and teaches Building the Brief: People Process Place (ABPL90321). In 2025, he secured an ARC Linkage Project grant with partners to develop an alternative and sustainable model for the design, economics, policy settings, and delivery of housing for First Nations communities in Shepparton, Victoria. He was appointed to City of Melbourne Design Advisory Bodies in 2021 and has served as jury convenor for the ArchitectureAu Award for Social Impact.
