Dr. Rory Weishaar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sport and Movement Studies at Central Washington University, where he serves as Co-chair of the department and Coordinator of the Sport and Athletic Administration MS program. He joined CWU in 2013 after a distinguished career in public education spanning over three decades. Previously, he worked as a high school English teacher for 16 years, multi-sport coach including football, volleyball, and track & field at high school and middle school levels, high school principal for 8 years, junior high school principal for 4 years, and athletic director for 8 years. Weishaar earned his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Counseling from the University of Montana-Missoula in 2005, M.A. in Secondary English from the same institution in 1989, B.A. in Secondary English in 1983, K-12 Principal’s Endorsements in Montana and Washington in 2001, and served as a Teacher-Consultant for the Montana Writing Project in 1988. He teaches courses such as HPE 546 Advanced Athletic Administration, HPE 570 Legal Liability and Risk Management in Interscholastic Athletics, HPE 583 Leadership and Decision Making in Athletics, HPE 585 Events, Facilities, and Scheduling Management in Athletics, HPE 587 Governing Organizations in Sports and Athletics, and others focused on interscholastic, intercollegiate, and professional sports issues.
Weishaar’s research interests include school improvement and culture, support for LGBTQ students in K-12 education, perceptions of pre-service teachers, coaches, and school/athletic administrators regarding LGBTQ students, and issues in professional sports, interscholastic sports, and athletic administration. His key publications encompass 'A Former Principal’s Reflection: A Plan for Enhancing School Improvement and Culture by Getting Connected' (2015, Journal of Education and Human Development), 'Perceptions of Pre-Service Teachers, Coaches, and School/Athletic Administration Regarding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) Students' (2015, Education Law Association Proceedings), 'Pre-Service Teachers: How Will You Support LGBTQ Students?' (2016, National Social Science Journal), 'Athletic and School Administration Candidates’ Perceptions When Dealing with LGBTQ Students/Athletes' (2016, Education Law Association Proceedings), 'K-12 LGBTQ Student Support: What Pre-Service Teachers Currently Know or Want to Know' (2017, National Social Science Journal), 'Pre-Service Teachers Understanding of LGBTQ Students' (2017, National Social Science Journal), and 'K-12 Teacher Candidates and Their Understanding of LGBTQ Students' (2018, National Social Science Journal). He has received the 2013 Frenchtown School District Distinguished Alumni Award, 2013 Outstanding Service and Dedication Award from the Montana Administrators Association, and 2017 Central Washington University PESHMS Connection Award. Weishaar has presented on topics such as managing interscholastic athletic programs and perceptions regarding LGBTQ students at conferences including the Dr. Bob Frederick Sport Leadership Lecture Series (2014) and the 11th Annual Globalization, Diversity & Education Conference (2015). He serves on the editorial board of PHE America.
