Ros Walpole is an Associate Lecturer (Teaching Scholar) in SCU College at Southern Cross University. Her academic background includes a Diploma in Education from Sydney, a Bachelor of Arts from UNSW, a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics (TESOL) from OTHOS, and a Master of Education (Research) from Southern Cross University. Possessing over 35 years of experience teaching English as an additional language (EAL) to international students across government, private, and university sectors in both face-to-face and online environments, she has engaged learners from diverse backgrounds and age groups. Ros Walpole teaches across English Language, Preparing for Success, and Diploma programs, specializing in academic and digital literacies with a particular focus on university transitions and socio-cultural challenges for EAL students.
Her Master of Education (Research) thesis, completed in 2022 and entitled 'An ethnographic exploration of the experience of transition to higher education in international students,' delves into the linguistic, academic, and social-cultural difficulties encountered by international EAL students during their transition to university. Ros Walpole's research interests encompass the English language proficiency, social-cultural adaptation, and academic challenges faced by international EAL students entering higher education. She has presented at events including 'Embedding support for diploma-level students to become independent learners' with Michael Brickhill at the SCU Scholarship of Learning and Teaching Symposium in 2022, and the webinar 'Hybrid Learning: Preparing Global Learners for the SC Model' with Alana Bryant, Brian Fabian, and Sharon Leslie. In recognition of her contributions, Ros Walpole was awarded the Inspiring Educators award in 2023 for her enthusiastic, creative teaching and innovative pedagogical approaches that motivate diverse students at various learning stages and inspire colleagues.
