Great Professor!
Rosa McCarty is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology within the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Melbourne, part of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine from the University of Adelaide in 2008, along with a Bachelor's Degree with Honours and a Bachelor's Degree from the same university. McCarty also holds a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching. Her career trajectory includes postdoctoral research at the Australian Stem Cell Centre from 2008 to 2010, after which she joined the University of Melbourne as a Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics in 2010, advancing to her current role. Since 2017, she has served as a Teaching Fellow in Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine at the Centre for Stem Cell Systems. As Principal Coordinator of Frontiers in Biomedicine (BIOM30001), she has taught subjects including Drugs in Biomedical Experiments and contributed to stem cell education initiatives such as Stem Cells and Society.
McCarty's research specializations encompass adult stem cell biology, tissue regeneration, regenerative medicine, and stem cell differentiation, with particular emphasis on stromal stem cells in adult lung homeostasis and their interactions with epithelial stem cells, as well as bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells for cartilage regeneration. Notable publications include 'TGF-β signaling in stromal cells acts upstream of FGF-10 to regulate epithelial stem cell growth in the adult lung' (2013), 'Application of Autologous Bone Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells to an Ovine Model of Growth Plate Cartilage Injury' (2010), 'Characterisation of ovine bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal/stem cells and autologous application to growth plate cartilage defect' (2009), and 'Characterisation and Developmental Potential of Ovine Bone Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells' (2009). Her 36 publications have garnered approximately 1,900 citations. Recognized as an award-winning teacher, she has received multiple honors at faculty, university, and national levels and conducts scholarship of teaching and learning research, such as studies on lecture transcripts' value for students.
