Dr Rosemarie Herbert serves as Senior Teaching Fellow in the Science Faculty Office at Monash University’s Faculty of Science. Having commenced her academic path at Monash as an undergraduate science student, she earned her BSc with honours and completed her PhD in 2017. Her doctoral thesis explored the genetic basis of Wolbachia’s protective effects against dengue virus transmission in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, with a focus on genomics, bioinformatics, mosquito biology, and cell culture techniques. Remaining at Monash throughout her career, Herbert has shifted emphasis from research to education, championing student employability and professional skill development.

Herbert’s research specializations encompass work-integrated learning and industry experiences, including asymmetrical curriculum designs like choose-your-own-adventure assessments and digital communities of practice via tools such as Slack. She examines barriers to diversity, equity, and inclusion in work-integrated learning, the global pandemic’s effects on student employability, and AI applications for STEM job interview preparation. Notable publications include co-authored chapters “Resumes and Cover Letters” and “Addressing Key Selection Criteria and Interviews” in Building Your Career in STEM: A Professional Guide for Students, Recent Graduates, and Beyond (2024); “Do Students Value On-Campus Field-Based Education? A Case Study of Science Educational Initiatives in the Jock Marshall Reserve” in the International Journal of Innovation in Science and Mathematics Education (2022); “The nature of the immune response in novel Wolbachia-host associations” in Symbiosis (2018); and “The transcriptional response of Aedes aegypti with variable extrinsic incubation periods for dengue virus” in Genome Biology and Evolution (2018).

She has garnered significant recognition for her teaching innovations, receiving the ACEN WILA Best Poster Award (2024), Allan Christie ASCILITE Innovation Award (2024, shared), ASCILITE Innovation Award General Category (2024, shared), Faculty of Science ECR Symposium Seven Minute Seminar runner-up (2024), and Monash Education Academy The Pitch (2023, shared). Herbert leads funded projects such as “Accessibility in science internships: understanding the needs of disabled and neurodiverse students” (2025-2026) and “Human-centred design to improve WIL for neurodivergent individuals” (2023-2024). An active conference speaker and organizer, she advances discourse on science education and employability. She welcomes PhD students in science education research, focusing on work-integrated learning and STEM employability.
